Newborn Session Styles

If you have ever booked a newborn session with me you will know we will start with a questionnaire to learn a little bit about what kind of session you are hoping for. One of your big decisions will be deciding between a traditional posed session, a relaxed posed session, or a lifestyle session. I thought I would put together a post with some examples of each session style because as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words!

Lifestyle

Lifestyle sessions take place in your home. They involve a lot of family interaction, and your home will be in the background of your photos. Lifestyle photos are often a favourite of those who want a more relaxed session; they do not depend upon a sleeping baby so they can happen anytime after a baby is born, and the session is faster than a posed session. Families often like lifestyle sessions because they document not just baby, but also the family interactions, and all the little details of the home and the nursery at that moment in time.

Traditional Posed

Traditional posed photos feature baby in a variety of poses on a backdrop. I use my studio lights for these photos. These photos are ideally booked within the first two weeks after baby is born because they require a sleepy baby. They often require more time than lifestyle photos. Some families also do family and sibling photos during these sessions and they are also done against a backdrop.

Relaxed Posed

I like to think of relaxed posed sessions as a bit of a cross between lifestyle and traditional posed. These photos still happen on a backdrop with my studio light, but we are not working quite so hard to get baby into particular poses. Instead, we are capturing images of baby in a more natural way. These work best if baby is sleeping, but it is not absolutely necessary like it is with traditional posed photos, so we have more flexibility in when we do the session. These sessions are also generally faster than traditional posed sessions. This session style has also become one of the ways I have adapted to Covid. For families who wanted posed photos on a backdrop (as opposed to lifestyle photos), I can do this style of session with very little contact with baby.

Newborn Albums

I did this little peanut’s photos a little while ago, and her mom ordered an absolutely beautiful album. It is always so excited to see these digital images come to life in print, and in a very special heirloom album that she will be able to keep and treasure forever.

Two Peas in a Pod

I photographed this little newborn baby in the early spring, and I just couldn’t get over how much she looked like her big sister! When I was editing the photos of the two of them with their faces together I kept thinking of them as two little peas in a pod. It will be so neat to see them grow together!

Such a cold day for such a cute baby!

One of the many benefits of being a newborn photographer is getting to meet new additions to the family right away! I was very lucky to meet my newest little relative during our awful cold snap this year and she must have been happy about it too because she cooperated very well.

And just like that she’s one!

This little sweetie was a part of our Baby’s First Year program and you follow our Instagram or Facebook page you’ve probably seen her grow throughout the year. It was very fun for me to document these changes over the year, and now to look at them all together to see how much she has changed through the months.

I have had so much fun documenting some of our little Baby’s First Year clients during 2018, and for the 2019 year I have continued on with the program but made some new and exciting updates. You can read all about the new and improved program here:¬†Baby’s First Year . Now families can have a full newborn session, and then attend our Year of the Minis program (at the special Year of the Minis Price!) to capture their baby through the year and during those seasons when parents always look for those classic photos (you know – baby surrounded by fall leaves, baby’s first Christmas or winter, baby in that golden summer sun, baby with those beautiful spring blossoms). There is an option to add a maternity session as well. Families will then receive a complimentary high quality album that includes the photos from throughout the year. So that baby album that everyone struggles to finish is already done for you! If you are thinking about this program and have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Holiday Mini Sessions – The Baking Edition

Day two of our mini sessions this year was the baking theme. We were particularly excited about this one – it was very different from any theme we have ever done before and resulted in such timeless and classic photos. It doesn’t hurt that we had so many cute kids in the photos!

Christmas Minis – The Jammie Edition

The first day of our Christmas Mini Sessions this year started out with a Christmas Jammie theme. We had a lot of fun listening to some Christmas music and doing our photos and all the little ones were happy to leave with a cookie. It was a bit of an easier experience than our cold outdoor Christmas minis last year! It was a very simple theme which allowed for fun colourful jammies and some families even brought a few favourite Christmas items along.

Flower Shop

This was another great fall session. I finally invested in studio lights this year and I am already so glad. This was a great example. We did these photos in October. And this year in October we did have some nice days for photos (see my post An Engagement and a Puppy), but we also had some pretty cold and dreary days, and they day we did these photos was one of them. I was very glad especially with a three year old that I had the option of indoor portraits. And I was able to do the little flower girl theme which is always a favourite.

Christmas Jammies and Fireplace

I posted last week about our Christmas baking minis, but I’ve also had lots of questions about our other set-up – the Christmas jammies option (which will be November 10/18). I’ve also had some questions about the family photo set-up. I wanted to do another post with some photos from those sets to give you an idea of them. The Christmas Jammies are pretty straightforward and simple – white on white background with some adorable little ones in their Christmas jammies – a classic! The fireplace will be the backdrop for the family photo (if you want one). I did some sample images here, but we are waiting for the season of beautiful natural evergreen branches to decorate the fireplace with along with some twinkling lights. We are so looking forward to seeing all our mini session families. We do still have a few spots left so if you are interested please don’t hesitate to book. And if you are wondering about our Christmas baking theme (November 11/18) be sure to check out my last blog!
